Code of Ethics for Curators

Code of Ethics

As institutional leaders who make important decisions about policy and content, curators often wrestle with complex ethical questions. The CurCom code of ethics is meant to provide guidance and inspiration to working curators who make crucial choices about such controversial issues as acquisitions and deaccessioning, research, interpretation, access, and conflicts of interest. In 2009, after an extensive process of feedback and peer review, the CurCom board approved a revised code of ethics that was written by a CurCom appointed workgroup. This new code of ethics reflects the changing nature of the curatorial profession, and includes sections on curatorial values and responsibilities, conflicts of interest, and the many roles that curators play in contemporary museums.

CurCom also has established a Standing Committee on Ethics, with the responsibility to serve as a general resource for information, discussion, and advice on ethical issues. To contact this committee, send an email to the committee chair at bpeterson@michenerartmuseum.org.
